History was made at the Miramar Invitational at the Ansin Sports Complex presented by The Ansin Foundation. Competitors representing USA, Jamaica, Great Britain, Canada, Columbia, Bahamas and many others had a chance to compete after being lockdown for a year due to the pandemic.
The track was on 🔥Sha'Carri Richardson (Dallas, TX) ran the 6th fastest 100m in history by a woman and currently has the fastest time in the world. Her 10.72 second performance is the world’s fastest of the 2021 season and instantly makes her a Tokyo Olympics favorite.
In the men’s 100m, Kyree King (Ontario, Calif.), a 2017 World Championships 200m semi-finalist, broke into the sub-10 club, winning in a lifetime best 9.97 over 2017 world champion and 2019 World Championships silver medalist Justin Gatlin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who closed well to clock 9.98.
Other notable performers were Miramar’s Briana Nichole Williams and Jamaica’s reigning Olympic Champion Elaine Thompson Herah who both competed in the 200m.
The inaugural Miramar Invitational has set a solid foundation and will be a meet that will continue to attract the world’s best. The City of Miramar wishes all athletes competing the best as they prepare to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in July.
As a former high school state record holder and state champion in track and field, it was amazing to witness such history making performances in our city. The hard work of our Parks and Recs staff went above and beyond to facilitate this USA Track & Field and IAAF sanctioned meet. I am so proud of our team. They consistently deliver.
Stay tuned for more high caliber track events including high school district championships next week.
