137 imagesUplifting, Entertaining and Educational! The African Children’s Choir is comprised of a 24-member ensemble of singers and dancers aged 7 to 10 years old. The children melt the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles and delightful African tunes, accompanied by instrumentation. The program features well-loved children’s songs, hand clapping, traditional spirituals and contemporary tunes. A marvelous by-product of the concert is the inspiration the music brings to virtually every listener. In spite of the tragedy that has marred their young lives, the children are radiant with hope, musically gifted and wonderfully entertaining.

The center is within and serves the current area identified by the CDC where the Zika virus is being spread by mosquitos. There are six Borinquen Medical Centers in Miami-Dade County, and they began in 1972 as a grassroots effort in the Puerto Rican community with a small grant from the Public Health Service to establish a health clinic. Over the years, they have grown to become a Comprehensive Primary Health Care, Dental and Behavioral Health Center serving Miami-Dade County.

It follows her journey from fatherless child, to ambitious actress, to the most powerful woman in Latin America and eventually, to a saint-like figure after her death from cancer at age 33. This musical theatre masterpiece fuses evocative chorales with exuberant Latin pop and jazz influences, creating an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as Eva Perón herself. Actors’ Playhouse is thrilled to reprise Evita, one of the most significant productions in our 30-year history, in both English and Spanish. (from Actor's Playhouse)

312 imagesYou are cordially invited to attend a day of action and making our voices heard... It's time to take this fight for our teachers to the streets! Legislators asked for a special session and it was turned down, despite complete unity and support of the Democratic caucus in both the state House and state Senate. We can and must do better to ensure that our public schools have the adequate resources to provide students with a high-quality education. It's time that #WeThePeople let Tallahassee know who's in charge. Sunday, August 19th, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm

For game notes from tonight's win, click here. A year after breaking the program record for most points scored in a game in a 63-45 win against UMass, FIU tied the mark with 63 points again. 720 imagesNutcracker 2018 (Day 1 and Day 2) TAYB’s Nutcracker ballet is more than a holiday tradition with familiar music. Students from all five TAYB sites start preparing for “The Nutcracker” in August, rehearsing weekly and learning the ropes of being in a large scale, full-length ballet production. The cast of over 140 includes New World School of the Arts students in the more advanced roles, along with world-class guest stars, guaranteeing both quality and a level of diversity not seen in other local productions of The Nutcracker. Our goal is to make certain all children in the audience see performers on stage who look like them. Over 7,000 public schoolchildren experience this production annually. The region’s first Sensory-Friendly Nutcracker was launched by TAYB in 2013. Through this effort, TAYB has become a leader by the local arts community in making the arts accessible to all children.. 112 imagesToday, it was an honor to stand by Florida Supreme Court Justice-Designate Renatha Francis in the City of Miramar. Governor Ron DeSantis appointed her to fill one of two vacancies. Her appointment is being challenged on a technicality and if successful, it would prevent a qualified jurist who happens to be a Black Woman, and an Immigrant from Jamaica from being the only woman and person of color on Florida’s highest court. I stand in opposition of many issues with our governor however, this issue is too important to not take a stand. I spoke with the Governor at length today and his staff on yesterday when the request was made to have the press conference in Miramar. If she is not seated, Florida’s highest court would not have one Justice who is Black and potentially could not have even a woman on the bench. The lawsuit should be dropped and Justice-Designate Renatha Francis should be seated as the first Jamaican-American Justice in this state’s history. She is truly an inspiration to all Floridians. photographer: gregory Reed, MFA

Kev Marcus plays the violin, and Wil B. plays the viola. For over a decade, the classical-meets-hip-hop duo has steadily built a devoted following — culminating in two sold-out shows at the John F. With the number of positive infections and related deaths surging in her state and across the nation, the Florida lawmaker will this week unveil a second memorial cemetery at North Miami’s Griffing Park. Congresswoman Wilson partnered with North Miami Councilwoman Mary Estime-Irvin, the Circle of Brotherhood, and the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project to erect hundreds of coraplast tombstones on which visitors will be able to write the name of someone they know who succumbed to the virus. “Each day we are reminded of the terrible toll the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our families and friends,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “These memorial cemeteries provide opportunities for members of our community to collectively grieve and to name and honor their loved ones in a public space of shared mourning.” Who: Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and North Miami Councilwoman Mary Estime-Irvin What: Memorial to honor the lives lost to COVID-19 When: Wednesday, October 28, 10:00 a.m. Where: Griffing Park, 12220 Griffing Boulevard, North Miami, FL 33161 Still Photography: Gregory Reed, MFA Aerial Photography: A.J. 34 imagesDerek Fleming https://mlmiamimag.com/one-of-our-men-of-style-derek-fleming Real estate developer, community builder and entrepreneur Derek Fleming has revitalized neighborhoods in San Francisco, New York and New Orleans, but lately he’s set his sights locally. The newcomer is currently overseeing a development in Miami’s historic Overtown neighborhood with the hopes of bringing interest to the often-overlooked community, and he also happens to be a managing partner in Red Rooster Overtown, star chef Marcus Samuelsson’s first restaurant in Miami. With a demanding career, a partner of 20 years and 7-year-old twin boys, life is busy to say the least. That’s why Fleming embraces style that’s versatile. “My friend Mayra and I call it calculatedly casual,” he says. “You can leave work, head to the bar, then to the hottest club in town in the same outfit and never skip a beat.” What’s your fashion philosophy? To stay away from trends and strive to be classic and timeless. photographer: Gregory Reed, MFA

The track was on 🔥Sha'Carri Richardson (Dallas, TX) ran the 6th fastest 100m in history by a woman and currently has the fastest time in the world. Her 10.72 second performance is the world’s fastest of the 2021 season and instantly makes her a Tokyo Olympics favorite. In the men’s 100m, Kyree King (Ontario, Calif.), a 2017 World Championships 200m semi-finalist, broke into the sub-10 club, winning in a lifetime best 9.97 over 2017 world champion and 2019 World Championships silver medalist Justin Gatlin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who closed well to clock 9.98. Other notable performers were Miramar’s Briana Nichole Williams and Jamaica’s reigning Olympic Champion Elaine Thompson Herah who both competed in the 200m. The inaugural Miramar Invitational has set a solid foundation and will be a meet that will continue to attract the world’s best. The City of Miramar wishes all athletes competing the best as they prepare to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in July. As a former high school state record holder and state champion in track and field, it was amazing to witness such history making performances in our city. The hard work of our Parks and Recs staff went above and beyond to facilitate this USA Track & Field and IAAF sanctioned meet. I am so proud of our team. They consistently deliver. 160 imagesRoscoè B. Thické III. Roscoè Join us for the 4th annual collaboration between IlluminArts and Oolite Arts as we highlight the first solo show of Oolite Arts resident artist, Roscoè B. Thické III. Roscoè is a Photographer and Visual Artist born and raised in Miami, Florida. After graduating from Miami Norland Senior High school, Roscoè traveled the world to find his voice and to serve his country. These travels took him to diverse lands such as Jordan, Iraq, South Korea and El Paso, Texas. While traveling, Roscoè attended various colleges, studying art at every turn, including design and photography at Broward College. This service to his country combined with personal experiences gave Roscoè an appreciation for the present and a longing to document his surroundings through photography. Roscoè uses his photography and visual artistry to tell stories that invoke feelings and a sense of understanding in the viewer. This musical and spoken word performance event will weave Roscoè's photography and stories together with music sung by “vocally sumptuous” (Chicago Tribune) soprano Whitney Morrison. Through storytelling developed and crafted by Roscoè and poet Arsimmer McCoy, this dramatic presentation will introduce audiences to Roscoè: Visual Artist, Veteran, Brother, Photographer, Father and Confidant. The musical program will feature works by Terence Blanchard, Jessie Montgomery, Nina Simone and more. Photographer: Gregory Reed, MFA
